So today my sister Amelia (shout out!) and I were talking about writing letters to our grandkids, saving them, and giving it to them later. I was thinking, if I were to write a letter, what would I say? When would I give it to them? Do I include pictures? By that time, will people even still WRITE letters? Hmmm...so many different elements.
I think I'd leave it to them in my will. I'd definitely include pictures, so they'd know I wasn't always as cute as they remembered me...at one time...I was CUTER. I'd want my grandchildren to know my story, my heart ache, my struggles, my highs and my lows. I'd want them to understand parts of my personality that might have been misunderstood. For example, I would want them to understand that I wasn't a grumpy old woman. I was a grumpy person in general! I've had a funky attitude my whole life and it isn't just something that came in my later years. :) I'd want them to know what went through a young 20 somethings mind back at the turn of the century. The things I was doing, the places I was going, and the things going on in the world around me.
I'd DEFINATELY tell them about their great grandparents and what incredible people they were and how important they were in my life. I'd tell them about my sister and how much we were alike, but how much we were totally different. And my half sisters Susan and Paula and how nutty they were (in a good way).
At the end of my letter I'd say "If there was any advice I could give you it would be this: Never trust someone who says "trust me", save your pennies because one day they'll turn into a dollar (if y'all are even using dollars anymore), don't eagerly give your heart away because it's something that should be earned, and love your parents unconditionally they've sacrificed a lot so that you could be here."
I think I'd probably leave them some of my favorite things. I'd leave them a cd of songs I loved ranging from M.C. Hammer-Too Legit to Quit to Billie Holiday-My Sweet Hunk of Trash. I'd leave them my cell phone because it's a very important part of my life and by that time...it'll be an antique. I'd leave them my sorority pins, an old family photograph, and my laptop because anyone who knows me knows I loooove my computer. Oh yeah...did I tell y'all I got a laptop?! It's pretty cool!
At the end of the letter, I'd put on some of my BRIGHTEST red lipstick and kiss the paper, spray some of my perfume on it, and stash it in a cute decorative box.
If you were to leave your grandkids a letter...what would it say??
